Visionary Craniosacral Work® is a soothing, non-invasive, hands-on therapy.
The craniosacral system includes the brain, the cerebrospinal fluid, the system of membranes inside the cranium, all 22 cranial bones, the spine and the sacrum.
What the Navajo call ‘the wind’s child,’ Genesis calls ‘the breath of life.’ It is a silent force, a field of chi, which blows through the craniosacral system, animates it, and infuses it with information and intelligence. It is possible to listen to this field. The ability to do this is called ‘the heart of listening.’
A visionary knows how to touch a client with precise and gentle contacts that help the client feel more aligned, and more at home in themselves. Sometimes, by touching just the right place in just the right way, a visionary can help the client understand what troubles them, and what they need to reclaim their equanimity, and their place in life. Such work can also help the client access and release their healing potential.
The Milne Institute offers an avocational, in-depth training in the heart of listening, a visionary approach to craniosacral work.
If you want to go deep, be deep.
This four-day class is designed to introduce analytical and intuitive visionary understanding of craniosacral work, perhaps more appropriately described as Sacred Cranial, since it approaches the head with such reverence. It is the High Art of healing touch. This exquisitely sensitive, subtle and careful work can be highly effective when properly applied; the gentlest of approaches is often more powerful than the most robust. As E.E. Cummings said, “nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands.”
The class emphasises perceptual clarity, inner calm and right action, which form the context for our study of cranial anatomy and technique. Each half-day of the class is devoted to the study of a specific cranial bone, using models, slides and hands-on work with a partner to deepen understanding. All practical work is under the constant supervision of the teacher. The techniques presented for each bone are brought together in a basic technique protocol that health care practitioners may use as a basis with which to introduce cranial work to their own practices.
*This class gives you 32 CEs from the NCTMB*
This four-day class is designed to broaden the scope of and deepen capabilities in Visionary Craniosacral Work, building upon the foundation of the introductory class. Cranial 2 is structured to show new ways to harness perception and insight to tactile and communicative skills, and to show new ways to interact with the conscious medium that is the body.
The class begins by devoting a 2 days to studying supine approaches to the sacral and coxal bones. The third day is focused on the lateral bony structures of the cranium and introduces coupled and spanning contacts to both the head and the face. The last day is dedicated to understanding the concept, sensitivity to and practice of unwinding.
*You receive 32 CEs from NCBTMB for this class*
This class series is open to those who have completed a minimum 150-hour massage certification program or similar coursework in a profession involving skilled touch.
There are seven four-day classes in the cranial series. Cranial 1 is the prerequisite for all further classes. Because Milne Institute Inc. training is distinctly different in focus and emphasis from other craniosacral trainings, exception from this prerequisite cannot be granted.
Hugh Milne’s book, The Heart of Listening: A Visionary Approach to Craniosacral Work, a culmination of many years of personal listening, touching and teaching, is required reading for all classes. For more details, please visit https://milneinstitute.com

In simple terms, if the cranial bones are not in the “right place,” then the brain and central nervous system cannot be in the “right place.” The hormonal system cannot perform optimally. Even though the cranial bones move only half the thickness of a sheet of writing paper, the human head is so delicate and so suffused with vital nerve pathways, that even slight deformations of a bone’s movement or position can produce physical or psychological symptoms, and often both.
When the cranial wave is distorted it also consumes or diverts a disproportionate amount of “chi,” or energy, lowers the strength of the immune system, and increases the likelihood of chronic states like depression becoming intractable. When the cranial wave is optimized, we feel “all of a whole,” we feel wonderful.
The optimum fluctuation of our energy field optimizes the functioning of our nervous system, and has a profound influence on our immune and hormonal systems. That is why some people whose conditions seem to be quite unrelated to the craniosacral system do feel much better after receiving the work.
Some dentists use it to ensure orthodontic appliances are correctly fitted, and as part of their work with jaw joint or temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD). Dentists find that a cap or filling that is even 3 microns too prominent (the thickness of fine dental carbon-paper) can cause jaw, neck and head pain—occasionally even knee dysfunction. When the prominence is removed, the patient often feels immediate and dramatic relief.
Craniosacral work is the only modality that specifically works with impacted sutures that can result from trauma to the head, releasing them through skilled and patient attention.
